As AHADI’s HR Officer, you will report directly to the Business Operations Manager/Chief Operations Officer and work with AHADI’s existing and potential employees, who come from a variety of national origins and professional backgrounds. You are a strategic partner who will collaborate with leadership to develop HR strategies that support AHADI’s organizational goals. Your work with AHADI will enable our client-facing teams to build self-reliance in African health systems.

We are looking for an HR Officer with strong organizational and interpersonal skills, a keen curiosity, a proactive approach to solving problems, and excellent oral and written communication. Previous experiences with start-ups and remote teams are a plus.

Responsibilities

The HR Officer will contribute to the design and run AHADI’s daily human resources operations and work with leadership to shape foundational policies and team culture. The HR Business partner should be comfortable navigating and resolving sensitive cultural and linguistic differences among team members from diverse backgrounds.

The HR Business Partner will be responsible for:

  • Leadership: Operates as a trusted partner and advisor to AHADI’s leaders in all areas of talent management, employee lifecycle, and development matters, with increasing accountability for strategic decisions
  • Recruiting: Runs AHADI’s recruiting and hiring process, including sourcing and vetting candidates (with leadership support), coordinating interviews, and onboarding newly hired candidates, including in-house full-time employees and contractors
  • HR administration: Ensures that all HR and operational practices adhere to relevant employment laws, which will include but is not limited to the
    United States, Kenya and other sub-Saharan African countries
  • Employee relations: Oversees employee relations process and provides guidance to employees, serving as the point of contact for employees’ HR questions and responding in kind. Develops and maintains HR policies including but not limited to leave, compensation, performance management code of conduct, etc.
  • Compliance and reporting: Supports leadership in preparing and submitting required reports for payroll, benefits, and other HR-related areas. Maintains compliance with employment laws and customs

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Administrative support: Manages and coordinates office operations in global geographies. Optimizes business processes.
  • Culture: Partners with the Business Operations Manager and the Operations team to enhance and embed AHADI’s values into the organizational culture
  • Other job duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or other comparable field; or equivalent professional experience
  • At least two years of relevant work experience in human resources, preferably in a startup or nonprofit environment and/or international context diverse organization
  • Experience in working cross-functionally with all areas of HR
  • Experience handling employee relations issues, ideally in multiple jurisdictions (e.g., USA, Kenya)
  • Have work authorization in Kenya

Preferred Qualifications

  • SHRM, HRCI or comparable certification
  • Experience in drafting and/or implementing HR policies (e.g., hiring, performance management) in a new organization that accommodates diverse regional needs
  • Experience working with or for NGOs, nonprofits, and/or multi-laterals focused on public and/or global health

Minimum Competencies

  • Professional proficiency in English
  • Proficiency with standard office platforms (Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Dropbox, etc.) as well as digital collaboration tools (Zoom, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of HR compliance requirements in the US and Sub-Saharan African regions, with the ability to research and apply local employment laws across Africa and other geographies as needed
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Ability to work productively as part of a team
  • Ability to effectively deliver outputs and collaborate with team members in aremote, distributed working environment
  • Ability to work occasional extended hours to meet a deadline

Preferred Competencies

  • Familiarity with HRIS platforms
  • Ability to manage multiple, shifting priorities in a fast-paced and demanding operating context. Excellent planning, prioritization and delegation skills
  • Ability to manage complexity and navigate change
