Health Emergencies

Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest frequency of epidemics globally. AHADI will respond to countries’ analytics needs in order to strengthen health emergency preparedness and responses at national and subnational levels.

Africa Epidemic Atlas Initiative

AHADI is working to generate a database to inform epidemic preparedness and response in Sub-Saharan Africa.

High quality and high-resolution spatial-temporal data on disease and its determinants are essential to permit the understanding of the burden of epidemics, their co-occurrence and develop appropriate preparedness and response plans.

In Africa, the diversity of disease-causing pathogens, host susceptibility, and environmental, climatic, social and other contextual factors necessary for transmission have contributed to outbreaks and epidemics.

In 2015-2018, some members of AHADI worked with the WHO Regional Office for Africa to develop a comprehensive spatially and temporally defined database of outbreaks and epidemics of diseases with potential for international spread in accordance with the International Health Regulations of 2005. AHADI will expand this database to all Sub-Saharan African countries to create an epidemic intelligence platform to inform epidemic risks, preparedness, and response.
