The Role

The Analytics team at AHADI is looking for great people with strong quantitative and public health skills and an interest in using analytics to support priority-setting and decision-making in countries with high disease burden. This position will have a primary work area of analyzing malaria data in the context of national malaria programs’ strategic planning and prioritization processes, with potential secondary work areas in analysis of broad health sector data and health emergencies data.

We are looking for a scientist with strong coding skills, a keen curiosity, a proactive approach to solving problems, and excellent oral and written communication. Previous experience with public health data is not required if the applicant can demonstrate a strong track record of learning new skills.

AHADI’s analytics team analyzes field, trial, survey, and routine health system data; develops, configures, calibrates, and applies disease transmission and geospatial models; and designs and builds new data and analytics solutions to answer questions aimed at informing public health decision-making. The team supports training, educational, and skills development initiatives offered by AHADI or our partners and is actively engaged with the broader health analytics community.

Responsibilities

We seek an Epidemiologist/Biostatistician to analyze public health data using multiple quantitative methods to support priority-setting and analysis needs of the countries we serve. The Epidemiologist/Biostatistician should be comfortable with the entire data analysis and policy translation pipeline, from study design, data management and analysis to engaging effectively with public health practitioners to understand and deliver on their needs. The Epidemiologist/Biostatistician must be highly flexible and able to adapt methodological and communication approaches to meet different needs.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Writes software code (in R and/or Stata) to manage, visualize, analyze, and model a variety of health data types
  • Identifies and applies appropriate quantitative and statistical methods for the problem at hand
  • Liaises between public health partners and analysis partners
  • Prepares reports and presentations to effectively communicate methods and findings to stakeholders, including ministries of health and other partners
  • Trains, supervises, and collaborates with partner individuals and institutions to support upskilling of local public health analytics talent

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Supports multiple AHADI initiatives as needed across the data and analysis pipeline
  • Supports, facilitates, and/or co-instructs in training initiatives offered by AHADI or its partners, as appropriate to the hire’s individual expertise
  • Prepares manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in epidemiology or biostatistics, or DrPH; alternatively, Ph.D. in a related quantitative field and at 2+ years’ experience working with epidemiological or public health data
  • Experience in statistical analysis, including statistical tests and basic regressions
  • Experience in analysis of epidemiological, public health, clinical trial, or other health data

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with ministries of health or public health departments
  • Exposure to policymaking processes and data-to-action frameworks
  • Experience working with survey data, routine surveillance data, and/or raster data
  • Experience building geospatial models, predictive models, Bayesian models, and/or machine learning models
  • Published articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals

Minimum Competencies

  • Proficiency in data manipulation
  • Proficiency in at least one data analysis language (R or Stata)
  • Proficiency in data visualization, including making maps
  • Clear and effective communication of quantitative work to non-experts
  • Ability to deliver on multiple priorities and programs of work with diverse methodological approaches
  • Ability to work occasional extended hours to meet a deadline
  • Ability to work productively as part of a team as well as independently drive a program of work to completion
  • Ability to effectively deliver outputs and collaborate with team members in a remote, distributed working environment

Preferred Competencies

  • Professional proficiency in English and at least one of French, Portuguese,
or Swahili
  • In depth knowledge of principles and methods of epidemiological study
or clinical trial design
  • Familiarity with basics of health economics
  • Familiarity with issues of public health in African settings
